Comodo firewall linux mint9/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Always running AV scans in Windows really degraded the experience. But linux is as secure as you're going to get, and that is nice. Security isn't the main reason I switched to linux (I have no Windows partitions anymore), and I actually agree with the idea that the worst thing you can do is use an OS or app that you think will make you immune to hacks. If you want to use something like clam, go ahead, though it'll degrade overall performance and clam isn't really intended to be a general purpose AV app anyway. For most users the default GUFW settings are fine. Yes, you should use one, and for servers they're essential. Many linux users go for some time without one at first because they don't realize it isn't turned on by default. You don't really need a firewall in linux the way you'd have to be a techno retard not to use one in windows. They've been using linux at home for about 20 years. ![]() I know guys who have doing unix/linux tech/sysadmin for 20 years or more. You can use cloud services (like Gmail, but there are others as well) if you deeply feel the irresistible need to scan for Windows viruses in files on thumb drives etc. It's even useless when you wish to share files with Windows. Pjotr wrote:Actually antivirus on Linux does harm: it has no use at all, it degrades performance and it scares you with false positives: It took me a while to adjust to the linux way when i first started with it, but eventually you'll get comfortable. i'm not sure if there is anything else paid available for linux home users. so mostly all you will get are scanners, not realtime protection, unless you use a paid antivirus, like eset, which should protect continuously. avast results confused me the times i tried it. Other antivirus programs are avast and comodo, some people say comodo is bloated or problematic, and perhaps not even secure anymore. * i do have clamav installed with a custom script for scanning etc. * i also enable the ufw/gufw firewall, it is my preference to deny incoming and outgoing, and manually enable the ports i use. * dont alow third party cookies, but this means you have to do a little tweaking to enable youtube/google/facebook to bypass that. * make sure you do not have java installed, or at least remove/disable the plugin in browser. ![]() dont white list any website for flashblock, except youtube if you must. * install adblock plus, flashblock and https everywhere add-ons into firefox. What i do for decent security but yet usability: You can install clamtk (clamav), but you can get false positives, and CPU strain when scanning (the latter is normal for most antivirus though). See man 7 capabilities for more information on capabilities.Eset is a paid antivirus, its supposed to be good for performance and ease of use. LPFW strips itself of all capabilities except the following:ĬAP_SYS_PTRACE (to readlink() root's links in /proc)ĬAP_NET_ADMIN (to use netfilter_queue and netfilter_conntrack)ĬAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH (to scan all users' /proc/ entries) In order to set such a netfilter mark, LPFW uses libnetfilter_conntrack library. This enables LPFW to instantly halt all app's Internet activity if user chooses so. LPFW sets a unique netfilter mark on all connections of a specific app. Step 2: Comodo AntiVirus for Linux Installation. Step 1: Download Comodo AntiVirus for Linux (CAVL) Step 2: Download & install dependency libssl0.9.8 on Ubuntu.
